The North of England hosts one of the UK's most active live heavy metal circuits, built on a network of pubs, rock bars, working men's clubs, and independent music venues that run regular rock and metal nights year-round. If you're trying to work out where to actually go to see live metal outside London, this page is a starting point.

The venues worth knowing

This isn't exhaustive. It's the core rotation that touring rock and metal acts play when they come through the North. Every venue below hosts regular, not occasional, gigs.

Yorkshire

  • The Duck and Drake, Leeds. A multi-room pub in the city centre that's hosted live rock and blues for decades. The back room runs metal, tribute, and rock gigs several nights a week.
  • Keighley Picture House, Keighley. A restored cinema venue with decent acoustics and a committed programming team.
  • Jasper's Bar, Pontefract. Small, loud, friendly, and one of the most reliable rock and metal venues in West Yorkshire.
  • The Yorkshireman, Sheffield. A pub with a back-room gig space that punches well above its weight for metal bookings.
  • Yorkshire Rock and Bike Show, Leeds. An annual festival rather than a venue, but an essential part of the Yorkshire rock calendar.

Lancashire and Greater Manchester

  • The Star and Garter, Manchester. An independent pub venue near Piccadilly station. One of Manchester's best-loved small rock rooms.
  • Waterloo Music Bar, Blackpool. Blackpool's dedicated rock and metal venue, including the Hellfest weekender.
  • Sanctuary Rock Bar, Burnley. A small-to-medium rock and metal venue with a loyal local following.
  • The Pub, Lancaster. A China Street venue with a reputation for hosting rock acts, most famously the early gigs of UK Top 40 band Massive Wagons.
  • Whittles, Oldham. A real ale pub with a back room that runs rock and metal gigs.
  • The Ashton Jubilee Club, Wigan. A working men's club that runs regular rock nights.

Elsewhere in the North and bordering regions

  • Jacs, Aberdare. Technically South Wales, but a key stop on any Northern-based touring rock circuit.
  • The Globe, Glossop. A Derbyshire pub venue with an active rock programme.
  • Blind Pig, Sowerby Bridge. A West Yorkshire staple for local rock and metal.
  • The Empire, Warrington. A rock-friendly venue on the Cheshire-Merseyside border.
  • Duck and Drake (second Leeds venue in some listings), Lib (Marsden). Smaller local rooms that host occasional but reliable rock gigs.

How to find out what's on

Three tools cover most of the ground.

Songkick or Bandsintown. Install one, log in with your Spotify account, and both will track every artist in your library and notify you when they play near you. This is the single most useful thing you can do if you want to see more live metal.

Venue mailing lists and Facebook pages. Most of the venues above run their own mailing lists or social accounts with show announcements weeks or months ahead. Less algorithmic than a feed, more reliable than word of mouth.

Local metal and rock Facebook groups. Search your region plus "rock" or "metal" or "gigs". There's usually at least one active group per large town, and posts about upcoming shows are the main content.

The ticket economics

Most Northern rock and metal gigs at pub and club venues cost between 8 and 20 pounds. Door prices are common but advance tickets are often a pound or two cheaper and guarantee entry on busier nights. Larger venues and festival-style nights can run to 30 or 40 pounds.

At those prices, going to two or three gigs a month costs less than a single ticket to an arena tour, and you see a lot more live music.

Who plays these venues

Touring rock and metal acts, regional originals, and tribute bands all share the same rooms, often on the same weekly rotation. That includes us. Ey Up Maiden plays most of the venues listed above across any given year. Our full tour dates are here.
